What’s Kollab SF Create? When is it taking place?
The #MAYsianArt campaign was created by Kollaboration SF, a 501(c)3 non-profit that advocates for increased representation for AAPI artists in the entertainment industry. We thought about how Asian Pacific American Heritage Month represents a time to reflect on the spectrum of AAPI cultural traditions and histories, and wanted a way for visual artists to engage with those histories in the present. #MAYsianArt is a platform to promote the creation of work by AAPI artists on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook from May 1-31.
Who can participate?
Anyone can participate who wants to create art that showcases the breadth and depth of the AAPI artistic experience.
How does it work?
Create your art. We’ll be releasing weekly prompts but you can post as much or as little as you want!
Share your finished piece of art using the hashtag, #MAYsianArt. Note that your Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram profile must be set to “public” so we can view it!
Make sure your piece of art is in a square canvas or format.
Our social media accounts will be reposting some of our favorite pieces, so by using the #MAYsianArt hashtag, you consent to us sharing your art on our social media platforms. We’ll be attributing the work to whatever account you posted the work on (i.e. Post on an Instagram account and we’d write that the art came from your Instagram handle). Send us a DM if you wanted to post your work on your own socials but do not want us to repost!
We are looking for art with visual media. This includes traditional 2D art like paintings, sketches, photography, and ink, as well as 3D art like sculpture and ceramics. We accept art in video format -- such as music videos and film -- up to 10 minutes long. Keep in mind that if you share a clip on Instagram, it must be 1 minute or shorter. Other than that, you can use whatever materials you want, but no excessive violence or nudity, please! You can use other forms of media in your art as well, as long as you’re following the copyright laws in your country.
What kind of art can I submit?
No! If your artistic sensibilities lead you to a better, more fulfilling place, by all means, go for it. However, we will admit it can be a very cool artistic experience to look at the hashtag the week of and see how so many people can interpret a single word in so many different ways.
Do I have to post according to the prompt?
This campaign is the chance to show a movement of AAPI expression that has been steadily building. We’ve been here all along, but we’ve increasingly been receiving greater access to a larger pan-Asian community that spans the globe. Let’s own who we are and create art together. It doesn’t need to be perfect; it doesn’t even need to be “good.” Creative expression helps us articulate the experiences that make us Asian, or American, or human. So why don’t you pick up that pen, or that mouse, or camera, and start creating?
